Ranjitsinh Disale, an Indian schoolteacher in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, has stood out not only for his impressive teaching, but also for his generosity. After winning the 2020 Global Teacher Prize, an award that celebrates "exceptional" teachers with a $1 million prize money, Disale surprised the world by doing something no one expected. Instead of keeping his prize money for himself, he announced in an interview that he would share half the prize money with the nine other finalists. "If I share the prize money with the rest of the teachers they will get a chance to continue their work," he said, "and we can reach out and lighten the lives of as many students as we can." Disale was chosen from among more than 12,000 nominations and applications from more than 140 countries.
