When Chip Matthews heard the mail truck arriving on his sixth birthday, he rushed outside, and mail carrier Tawanna Purter surprised him with a gift of a dollar bill and four quarters. Purter makes a practice of helping others in little ways, and this was a bright spot for Chip and his family. Chip’s mom Bonnie said, “Our family, like many families, has endured a lot…has had some pretty significant challenges. And so gestures like that, I think those are the things, those are the memories that we’re hoping to take away from these nine months.” Since that day, the Matthews family and Purter have kept in touch. When Bonnie Matthews learned that Purter needed someone to watch her son while he was doing his online schooling and she was delivering the mail, Matthews didn’t hesitate to step up to help.
