Portugal is Europe’s largest manufacturer of bicycles, and at the onset of the Covid-19 lockdowns, Portuguese bicycle companies feared for their financial future. Now 2020 looks set to be a bumper year for bicycle sales, as people shun public transport and choose healthier ways of getting around. After the two-month shutdown of the bicycle factories in Portugal, the manufacturers are struggling to keep up with booming global demand. Even before the pandemic struck, partly due to increased concerns of climate change and a move to healthier lifestyles, Portugal’s production had increased 42% in 2019 to a record 2.7 million bicycles.
