Scientists agree that at least some of our happiness is within our control. Here are five steps we can all take to make ourselves happier: 1. Enhance your social connections to be happier and healthier. 2. Engage in random acts of kindness to feel less depressed and anxious. 3. Express gratitude daily, as it helps retrain the brain to see the positives. 4. Practice mindfulness -- being present in the present moment instead of the past or the future increases feelings of self-acceptance. 5. Practice self-compassion, since a kinder inner voice helps us cope better with setbacks and grow through challenges. One final thought: Being happy doesn't mean we feel pure joy all the time; it also means accepting negative experiences and having the skills to cope and use them to make better decisions later.
