La Morada is a small family-run Mexican restaurant in the Bronx, N.Y., which has won Michelin acclaim. During the pandemic the restaurant has doubled as a soup kitchen, providing up to 650 free meals a day for those in need. The owners are activists who speak up in defense of immigrants without authorization to live in the US. “We always say that activism is our secret spice, so I feel like it was just very natural for us to serve the community with what we have,” said Yajaira Saavedra, who co-owns the restaurant with her parents. “It is mostly the community pitching in and friends and allies saying ‘We are going to do this, we are going to fight together and survive.’”
