Earlier this week, good Samaritans rushed to save an elderly couple from a near-fatal tragedy. Joseph Abitabile, 78, and his wife Delores, 76, crashed into another car while driving on Long Island, N.Y. The accident caused the couple's car to careen through a fence and plunge into a canal. Suffolk County police officers Debra Gearon and John Tighe, along with five others, jumped into the water to save the couple. One of the rescuers, mechanic Mustafa Tosun, told NBC News, "I saw the car is going still slowly, slowly going down (into the water). So, my God, these guys, they are going to die. I have to do something." Without hesitation he joined the others and helped get the Abitabiles out of their car so they could be transported to the hospital.
