Phil, who goes by the spoof alias “acclaimed artist Hercule Van Wolfwinkle,” started something unexpected when he posted on Facebook a doodle he’d made of his dog. In his post, he offered pet commissions at a joke price of £299 (about $390 US) each. Needless to say, Phil was beyond surprised when the serious requests for pet portraits started pouring in. He did the illustrations for free and shared them on social media. People wanted to pay him, but he said, “I couldn’t take their money -- the pictures are rubbish. So I set up a Just Giving page and suggested people donate instead.” In five weeks, the "rubbish" portraits raised nearly £5,000 ($6,527) for the charity Turning Tides, which serves the homeless. Phil has set a new goal of £10,000 ($13,056).
