Safe in Austin is a farm in Austin, Tex., that takes in abused animals and brings them together with children with special needs for everyone's benefit. Run by Jamie Wallace-Griner and her husband David Griner on a 10-acre farm, the farm family includes as many as 20 dogs, 14 cats, 8 horses, 32 goats, 4 rabbits, 3 turtles, 1 parrot, 4 turkeys, lots of chickens, 18 pigs and 4 cows. Initially the farm was funded personally by the Griners, but they eventually formed a nonprofit so they could accept donations. Stories of kids helped by time spent with the animals abound, and many former visitors eventually become volunteers at the farm.
