Mental illness effects one in four people in Nigeria, a country of 200 million people with only 250 psychiatrists. Due to Covid-19, the country has come up with a short-term solution: training other healthcare professionals and alternative medicine providers to be the first line of defense. These practitioners can refer the individual to a second line of defense, and they in turn can be referred to a tertiary group, which includes the psychiatrists. There have been some challenges, but Nigerians are hopeful this will help with the shortage or individuals available to help.
