Former carpenter and father of four, Mitchell Couch, has built dozens of desks for low-income students to help them stay focused during their at-home studies due to the pandemic. Inspired by his kids, who had taken over the kitchen table when school started in September, he built each of them a desk, and noticed an immediate improvement in their work patterns. Wanting to help other families, he posted a DIY instruction video for creating a desk for $20. He soon received requests from thousands of parents and students. When owners of discount supermarket chainGrocery Outlet offered to cover the material costs of the desks, he handcrafted 40 desks for students in September alone, with no plans to stop anytime soon.
