Reporter Janie McCauley became the news story when she started collecting foul balls at the Oakland As' stadium and giving them away as gifts. McCauley had access to the ballpark as a reporter covering the games and was spurred to action when a friend told her that she had not yet been able to corral a foul ball after 52 years of trying. Her friend got the first ball McCauley collected and McCauley is still giving them away. Essential workers, kindergarten teachers, road construction crews, chefs and many others have been the lucky recipients of McCauley’s special gifts. In a handwritten thank you note, one recipient said, “You certainly cheered me up once again with your thoughtful and sweet and cool gift from the ballpark (that I miss so much).”
