"Here in Texas, we love our birds," said former First Lady Laura Bush in a video to promote the Lights Out Texas campaign. Lights Out Texas advocates for a reduction of light pollution in the Lone Star State, where nearly a billion birds a year die crashing into buildings. Because they are attracted to light during their migration, which occurs at night, the birds collide into illuminated buildings. The campaign could help lower this collision risk during the flight of birds through the Texas night sky this fall.
