Debra Jo Chiapuzio and her dog, Emma Zen, have a mission in life: to make a difference for animals in wildfire zones. Emma Zen was rescued from a wildfire and taken to a shelter in the hopes of being reunited with her family, but the family never turned up and instead Chiapuzio adopted her. Chiapuzio had long been teaching pet first aid and CPR in her spare time and wanted the fire department in Anaheim, Calif., to have special pet oxygen masks to protect dogs like Emma Zen in her community. Eventually Chiapuzio created the Emma Zen Foundation to allow her to continue the work and get pet oxygen masks to many more fire departments. The masks have primarily saved dogs and cats but have also been used on miniature pigs, guinea pigs and an iguana.
