Joseph Griffin, a 28-year old Army veteran, was recently detained by police in Deltona, Fla., a predominantly white neighborhood, because he fit the description of a burglary suspect. Griffin was handcuffed and detained for about 15 minutes while the officer verified his identity. Both Griffin and the officer remained calm and made recordings of the event in progress. The story has an unexpectedly good ending. Griffin later heard from Sheriff Mike Chitwood, offering him a job and asking him to be part of Implicit Bias Training for the Sheriffs' Department. Griffin is doing the training but will not be leaving his current job in health care.
