On June 1, Denver launched a new program called STAR. The Support Team Assistance Response system dispatches mental health professionals instead of police officers when the situation calls for mental healthcare expertise. Since kick-off, STAR has responded to more than 350 calls and has not had to call the police for back up once. One of the main benefits to this program is that STAR professionals can talk with the person as long as necessary, and the police are available to take calls that need their involvement.
