Eight teenage climate activists in Australia filed a class action lawsuit that seeks an injunction to block the extension of the Vickery coal mine in Whitehaven. The activists aged 13-17 and their lawyers are taking a unique approach to the lawsuit by not bringing the suit under Australia’s environmental laws. The lawsuit alleges that the Federal Environment Minister has a common law “duty of care” for young people and cannot approve actions that will make climate change worse. David Barnden, attorney for the students, said the impacts of climate change on youth go “over and above regular people” because of their age. The teens claim to represent every person in the world under age 18 and say, “We’re playing to win.”
