Welcome news rang out when researchers sighted a newborn Orca whale calf frolicking off the Washington coast with her proud mom. Just two years earlier, the Orca whale, known as J35, was seen carrying her dead calf on a 17-day mourning tour of grief. The Southern Residents pod, numbering just 73, are scarce in their native feeding habitat, and a calf is a sign of hope and special cause for celebration.
