Modern medicine and Ayurveda can complement each other. While the former focuses on symptoms and zeroes down to root cause and follows one-size-fits-all approach, the latter focuses on wellness of the patient as a whole and recognizes her uniqueness. Unlike modern medicine, Ayurveda produces little side effect and can handle lifestyle diseases better. Way forward for Integrative Healthcare is “synergy” – synergy between Ministry of Ayush and Health & Family Welfare, synergy and collaboration between their research institutions, synergy between administrative machinery, bridge courses to enable Ayurveda practitioners to learn modern medicine and vice versa. It will create a cadre of community doctors reducing need to travel to urban areas, ensure better health and wellness, reduce scarcity of doctors/surgeons.
