In 2019, prior to coronavirus, scientific studies indicated an estimated two-thirds of Americans were part of a loneliness epidemic. There were concerns this number would grow with lockdown, shelter in place and social distancing in the midst of the pandemic. But a number of recent studies, including one that was conducted in the U.S., U.K. and 26 other countries, indicates loneliness has leveled out. According to Scientific American, as cities, communities, and neighborhoods strive to prioritize connection, a cultural shift may cause a social revolution, rather than a social recession.
