A ship ran aground off the coast of Mauritius and broke in two. The accident raised concerns that more oil would spill out near the coast of the Indian Ocean island. Alongside official cleanup efforts, locals have taken matters into their own hands. They were creating makeshift “booms” to combat the spill. Thousands of volunteers -- of all ages, ethnicities and social classes -- traveled from all over the island and are mobilizing in the wake of the devastating oil spill.
