In a society where transgenders are discriminated against in multiple ways, "Oruma" (Malyalam word for unity) canteen - run from end-to-end by trans women, offers a role model. Palakkad unit of Kudumbashree trained these trans women to prepare food. Today, their fresh food - ranging from crispy vadas to sambhar-rice - is relished by customers. Accustomed to begging, doing odd jobs and sex work, it has been a source of empowerment. Though the sales have dropped during the pandemic, party/bulk orders from the government and private functions have served as a cushion. Besides daily sales of around Rs 10000, the canteen has ensured a life of dignity and changed people's perceptions. It is a model worth emulating for empowerment and inclusive growth.
