California grassroots group The Homies Program is a youth and community organization that is proactively addressing the challenges faced by its community in this time of need during the pandemic. The group’s youth have banded together to gather donations and give away essential items for those who are most heavily impacted by Covid-19. The essentials include formula for children, fresh vegetables, canned goods and hygiene products. Last year, before the virus hit, the group focused on providing books and clothes for their neighborhood, but given the new climate, they have upped the ante so that the local community is able to get items that it sorely needs. They now occupy a large storefront in Oakland every Tuesday from 10 am to 4 pm — and are able to serve more than a thousand people per week.
