In Oakland, Calif., a few citizens felt "scarcity is a myth," so they decided to put that into practice. As summer got fully under way, a group of anonymous volunteers began setting up refrigerators in publicly accessible areas around the city. Anyone can open up a fridge anytime and take any of the food or beverages inside. The project, Town Fridge, has one simple goal: Try to provide sustenance to anyone who needs it. In the first month, four fridges have been set up in different parts of the city, with plans for five more to be set up soon. "This isn’t our job. We are not getting paid to do this. We are just concerned citizens wanting to help," said one of the organizers.
