In what is the first restoration of any land to the Native American Esselen Tribe, a land parcel of almost 1,200 acres has been reclaimed by it. While this is still a small part of their ancestral land on California's Big Sur coast, it marks a significant victory for the tribe, whose culture was decimated by Spanish colonial settlement nearly 250 years ago. The tribe chairman says that there will be no permanent houses or businesses on the land; they simply hold an intent to carry on their culture and values.
