With only 2,036 hospital beds and about 16 times as many cases of Covid-19, the overwhelming effects of the disease had ravaged the country of Kyrgyzstan. Bektour Iskender was watching his mother become another victim to the novel coronavirus when he turned to Twitter for help. Within hours, his mother received life-saving medical care from dedicated volunteer workers. Amidst the chaos, restaurants have been converted into clinics, regular vehicles have been supplied with oxygen tanks to be used as makeshift ambulances to transport sick patients. Volunteer organizations have been working overtime to receive calls from people in need of medical care, the Associated Press reports. “I think that when we win the battle (against the virus), we will see what huge role this mobilization of the civil society played,” Iskender said.
