In 2003, a class of 10-year-olds encountered a neglected litter of puppies without a home. Their elementary school teacher, Diane Trull, organized an effort to rescue the dogs. The class then went on to turn their act of goodwill into DAWGS n Texas, a shelter that has rescued 20,000 animals over the last 17 years. Trull has since written a book about the experience, and some of her students from that class -- now in their 20s -- continue to volunteer there.
