Brevard County, Fla., inmates provided comfort to shelter for dogs during the Fourth of July fireworks celebration this year. Because dogs hear at a higher frequency than humans, the sounds of fireworks can be painful. Coupled with bright flashes of lights, dogs can experience a multitude of stress-related symptoms during the displayes. Inmates feed, play and read to the dogs, offering comfort and calming company. For the inmates, the benefits include gaining a sense of purpose and compassion that can help them reintegrate into society after their release. This program is in its second year.
