According to a recent study our socioeconomic status has an impact in how we network. Apparently people who feel in control of their environments, normally those with status, are more prone to "widening", which is to reach outside the inner circle to expand their connections; in contrast to people who are more vulnerable who tend to opt for "winnowing" or asking for support only in their inner circle. This would have an impact when we are trying to find a job and it becomes especially important when so many people are suddenly laid off.
