U.S. Senators from both parties plan to propose making Juneteenth, a day that celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S., a federal holiday in the wake of protests across the country against racism and police brutality. Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris and Republican Sen. John Coryn announced they plan to introduce bills to make that happen. Texas has been officially celebrating the holiday since 1980, and this week, the states of New York, Virginia, Oregon and Philadelphia announced they will also make Juneteenth an official holiday. A growing list of companies are observing the holiday, and even Google has put out a video Google Doodle to commemorate the day.
