Officer C.B. Fleming in Virginia is very clear that his duty is to serve and protect. The first time he went to an apartment complex at South Hill, Va., to check a gas leak, he played dolls with the children there to calm them down. Since then, he has returned back there multiple times and created a connection with the children. He hopes to eliminate the children's fear of policemen and inspire others to become a catalyst of positive change. They call him "the Batman of South Hill." Amid systemic issues of police brutality and racism that have triggered a global call for deeper change, stories of individuals simply doing their best can serve as reminders of our shared humanity.
