Lockdowns have prevented millions from contracting and dying from the Coronavirus, at least according to researchers behind two papers published in Nature journal. After analyzing infection and death rates in 11 European nations through May 4th, Imperial College London's School of Public Health researchers estimated a staggering 3.1 million deaths have been averted across those countries. In California, a study from UC Berkeley analyzed lockdowns in China, South Korea, Iran, France, Italy, and the United States. They found that lockdown prevented 62 million people from getting infected by the virus. Both sets of researchers caution that as lockdown starts to ease around the world, public health officials still have limited tools to combat the virus. While experts caution the pandemic is far from over, it's apparent that without the lockdown policies, we would have had a very different April and May.
