According to a list compiled by activist and writer Cindy Milstein, mutual-aid groups have been started in at least 44 states and Washington, D.C., in response to the coronavirus. As these groups took to commercial technologies to help distribute groceries and coordinate public events, questions arose about whether profit-oriented platforms can sustain coordinated altruism over the long term. The Atlantic suggests guidelines and alternatives to organizing securely, using tools that are designed for data security, digital privacy and free speech.
