In response to the pandemic, an increasing number of universities are dropping SAT or ACT requirements for Fall 2021 admissions, fueling a movement to eliminate the tests from admissions decisions altogether. Some 80 colleges and universities have announced the shift this year, including all public colleges in Oregon, Cornell University, Vassar College, Tufts University and Fordham University. The University of California system voted to eliminate SAT and ACT from their admissions process by 2025, a decision that received mixed responses. Overall, 1,200 U.S. colleges have implemented test-optional admissions, most of which were announced pre-pandemic. With widespread cancellation of tests this spring, many students' lack of Internet access for the new online test format and concerns about the integrity of testing from home, coronavirus seems to have catalyzed a new, more holistic assessment yet to be defined.
