Small business owner Kathleen Makena, an esthetician in Raleigh, N.C., received a touching gift from an anonymous customer. The owner of Makena Skin Care used to book out three months in advance, but with shelter-in-place orders bringing her business to a grinding halt, she found herself with no income for the last six weeks. Although the state's Paycheck Protection Program has approved over 56,000 loans and payouts have totaled more than $4.2 billion, her appeals for government support were lost in the shuffle. "I didn't get it; the money went so fast," Makena explained. And so, when a caring customer mailed a card with caring words and a monetary donation in the amount of their stimulus check, Makena found her "eyes welled up with tears, I just couldn't believe the kindness, the generosity, the thoughtfulness."
