"For 15 years, Adam Chester has subbed for Elton John, performing John's parts in rehearsals with the rocker's band. But with John sitting out the pandemic, Chester had to find another gig. "Chester began playing music at home to lift spirits, and moved his keyboard outside to sing for his neighbors. Now, every Saturday night he offers a socially distant concert at his corner of suburban Los Angeles. A rectangle outlined in sidewalk chalk displays the words "Social distance" with a heart at its edge. All week I look forward to that Saturday show, said one neighbor, who along with others pitched in to buy a tripod to hold Chester's phone so the concert could be streamed online. These concerts may outlast lockdown. Exhilarated after each concert, Chester said, "I can't imagine going back to anything normal after this."
