"The moments of happiness we enjoy take us by surprise. It is not that we seize them, but that they seize us." -- Ashley Montagu

Hello everyone! ‘Surprise’ is an aspect of our lives that makes life interesting. Not knowing what will ‘seize us’ at a given time makes life varied, engaging, and captivating. ‘Surprise’ flows through our stories this week: a ten-year-old writes a music score and musicians around the world perform it for her; a crane, badly wounded, remains by the side of the man who helped him heal rather than flying free; and a shack in Brazil is given the prestigious House of the Year award in an international architecture competition. May you be well and enjoy a week of wonder and happy surprises!

Curious as to what her 10-year-old daughter's short, handwritten melody sounded like, a mother posted a TikTok video asking whether someone can play it for her. Musicians from around the world responded, playing different arrangements of the melody using a variety of instruments. The composition was even performed by a full string orchestra comprised of members from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The mother and daughter were deeply moved by the outpouring of support from musicians. "When I posted the video," the mother recalls, "I never imagined this response. [A response made by] artists from everywhere...[with] every instrument... every interpretation…This is what music does. It connects us. When everything online seems dark, we can create the light…" Read Full Story.

Brazilian Favela Shack Wins House Of The Year Award

Brazilian Favela Shack Wins House Of The Year Award

At first glance, it is a house like dozens of others in the crowded favelas of Brazil. But this seemingly modest dwelling with its exposed brick walls, has just been recognized as the "house of the year" in an international architecture competition. The two-story structure honored by specialized website ArchDaily belongs to Kdu dos Anjos, a 32-year-old artist living in the bustling Aglomerado da Serra favela. ArchDaily preferred the house to other worthy entries from India, Mexico, Vietnam and Germany, because the design represents a constructive model using common materials in the slums, "with an adequate implementation and attention to lighting and ventilation, resulting in a space with great environmental quality." Dos Anjos, who founded a cultural center in his community, and has been living in the house since 2020, along with two dogs, a cat and more than 60 plants, feels "on top of the world"! "I'm very proud that my house won this prize, because most of the news about the favelas talks of violence and homes destroyed by landslides," he said. Read Full Story.

A British Family Wants To Make Amends For Its Slave Ownership Past

A British Family Wants To Make Amends For Its Slave Ownership Past

Members of the Trevelyan family have set up a £100,000 ($119,479) fund meant to investigate the lingering economic impacts of slavery in the eastern Caribbean, as well as establish the Reparations Research Fund at the University of the West Indies. The Trevelyans were among the British slave-owning families who received compensation when slavery was abolished in parts of the British Empire in the 19th century. But 200 years later, the family are seeking to make amends to the community whose forced labor it profited from. For John Dower, a descendant of the Trevelyan family, his family's past came as a shock. He was conducting genealogical research when he discovered his family's co-ownership of 1,004 slaves throughout six plantations in Grenada, a former British colony. "I had no idea. It became apparent that no one living in the family knew about it. It had been expunged from the family history," Dower told the Guardian. "I was more than shocked, I was badly shaken. I was under the impression that I came from a benevolent, public service-facing family." Read Full Story.

L.A.'s On-Demand Buses Pick You Up At Your Door

L.A.'s On-Demand Buses Pick You Up At Your Door

L.A. Metro

"We began by looking at why companies such as Uber and Lyft were so attractive in their offerings, and what it was that they focused on in terms of customer experience, and how could we be able to compare to that?" said Rani Narula-Woods, creator of Los Angeles' Metro Micro. It's like a door to door ride share, using 10 seater buses, and it costs $1. But it is public transportation, known as micro transit, that went viral after comedian Adam Conover made a TikTok. The on-demand rideshare service is 'hyper-local', focusing on short local trips within several zones in LA County, using small vehicles as a fast, safe and convenient option for quick trips around town. Micro is part of Metro's family of services, designed hand-in-hand with its NextGen Bus Plan. Read Full Story.

The Crane Which Refuses To Leave Its Human Savior

The Crane Which Refuses To Leave Its Human Savior

A year ago, Mohammad Arif found an injured Sarus crane in a field on his farm in India's Uttar Pradesh state. Its right leg was completely broken and it was bleeding heavily, he said. He took the bird home and nursed it back to health, using some home remedies. After six weeks, when it could again stand on its feet and its injuries had healed, he thought the crane would return to the wild. But instead, it stayed on -- the crane rarely leaves his side, as this video shows. It always roams free - they don't tie it up or cage it. "I just performed my duty as a human being", he says. "When I saw it injured, I felt that I should help it." Read Full Story.
